Seungtak Jin: Time Regained
Nov 8 - Nov 22
H-flux Gallery is delighted to present Time Regained, the solo exhibition of self-taught artist Seungtak Jin. Jin’s artistic practice begins with recalling and reconstructing long-buried memories. Art critic Kwang Jin Choi explores the theme of Jin's work in “Time Regained in the Gaps of Forgetting and the Unconscious,” suggesting that the past we have forgotten has not truly disappeared but lies dormant in the deep layers of the unconscious. Jin's paintings revisit childhood scenes from rural Jeonju—running through fields with cousins, watching his mother sew, and observing insects and water droplets. These are contrasted with painful memories of shame, loss, and grief, such as bathing outdoors as a child, the death of his sister, and the later passing of his father, who often reappears in his work as a winged angel. According to Kwang Jin Choi, fragments of memory are reassembled on canvas in a nonlinear temporality; past and present overlap with reality and imagination. Interwoven with photographs and English words, Jin’s paintings transcend nostalgic recollection to become a process of self-reconstruction. After nearly forty years of running Krone Bakery in Seoul, Jin began painting only recently. This exhibition marks the symbolic beginning of the second chapter of his life—a journey to recover forgotten memories and reclaim his authentic self. It is, in every sense, his own Time Regained.
